Morning, Surbiton. It's Friday, so this one's your weekend: the Farmers' Market is back on Maple Road tomorrow, a Surbiton coffee name has expanded into Kingston, and the heat-health alert finally lifts tonight. One reader has also flagged a fresh set of traffic lights on Berrylands Road that isn't on any official list yet. Welcome to Victoria and everyone new in KT6.
Farmers' Market returns to Maple Road tomorrow
Third Saturday of the month means the Surbiton Farmers' Market is back — tomorrow, 9am to 1pm on Maple Road. Up to 40 stalls, with fresh produce, baked goods, English wine, French cheese and charcuterie, plus pottery, candles and the usual coffee queue. It's free to wander and one of the easier things to do with kids in tow.
A Surbiton coffee name opens up in Kingston
ICON, the coffee and brunch house started by Johnny Tiddy on Claremont Road in 2024 and now on Ewell Road too, has opened a third site — this one on Clarence Street in Kingston, next to The Rex. It opened earlier this month, serving coffee, matcha, smoothies and made-to-order açaí bowls. Two Surbiton shops grew into a small local chain in under two years, which is no small thing on a high street.
A reader tip, hot off the street. Alison spotted a new set of temporary traffic lights yesterday on Berrylands Road, between the Pine Walk and Regent Road junctions. It's not on the council's roadworks list yet, so consider this your early warning — thanks, Alison. If you know what's being dug up, reply and I'll chase it.
- Hook Road at Gladstone Road: those two-way lights are still up — TfL now says they run until 21 July, not the 16th I gave you. They keep extending it.
- Hook Road at Bridge Road roundabout: western side still closed, temporary lights round the eastern side, until 31 July.
- A3 at Tolworth: no change — still 29 July, traffic flowing well this morning.
- Bus 281: still on diversion until 29 July, missing Tolworth Station both ways.
- Heads-up: gully works are booked for Ewell Road near Tolworth Close from 27 July to 7 August.
K1, K2, K3 and the 71: good service, no diversions posted today.
- Tonight, Fri 17 July: Radio Gaga — a Queen tribute night, Rose Theatre, 7.30pm. tickets
- Sat 18 July, morning: Farmers' Market on Maple Road, 9am–1pm — and the Manor Park games-pitch consultation runs 10am–noon at Manor Park if you want your say on the new location.
- Sat 18 July, evening: The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Rose Theatre, 6.30pm. tickets
- Sun 19 July: Community Brain walk — Richard Jefferies Footsteps, part two, from Tolworth Station. Plus live music at The Lamb from the afternoon (their Sunday session). walk details
A cloudier start breaking into sunny intervals, high of 25°C — a notch cooler than the week, with a 30% chance of a shower late evening. UV is still high at 8, so shade in the middle of the day. London's yellow heat-health alert lifts at 9pm tonight, so no alert over the weekend.
A quick word before I go. Two weeks ago this was just an idea. This week we passed 200 subscribers — neighbours right across Surbiton, Berrylands, Tolworth, Southborough and down to the river. And more and more of what's useful in here, like Alison's roadworks tip today, comes straight from your replies. We're quietly building a proper little community here. Glad you're part of it.
Have a good weekend. If you spot roadworks, a new shop, or something worth a mention — like Alison did — hit reply. That's how this paper knows what's going on.
