your town, every morning

Afternoon. Lime bikes can no longer be parked anywhere in the borough, and three of you wrote in with what's replacing Poundland. Then new roadworks on Ewell Road, where to take old gadgets, and the week.

Lime bikes: nowhere to stop

Since 29 September, Lime riders can't end a trip or park anywhere in the Royal Borough of Kingston, the council said on Friday. It cites badly parked and abandoned bikes blocking footpaths. Lime has updated its app, and riders who leave a bike in the borough face penalties from Lime. The council's e-bike contract is with Forest. Thanks to Anthony for flagging it.

Still seeing Limes dumped on your street? Report them to Lime on 0800 808 5223 or london-ops@li.me. For a Forest bike, it's 0208 157 7491 or cs@humanforest.co.uk.

What's replacing Poundland

Three of you sent this in. According to the Good Life Surbiton, the old Poundland at 73 Victoria Road is being fitted out with shelves and will reopen as Bargain World, a discount shop selling much the same sort of stock. It's aiming to be trading by Monday 19 October.

Roads

Lamberts Road closes from Wednesday at the dig opposite Villiers Path, by King Charles Road, around the clock until mid-November. Homes inside the closure keep access. The signed diversion is via Surbiton Hill Road and Cranes Park.

Ewell Road gets two-way lights from 7am on Saturday, southbound by Shalston Villas, outside Mellish Court, until 20 November. A second set follows outside 198–200 Ewell Road from 14 October. Both are the same UK Power Networks cable job.

Portsmouth Road has multi-way lights near the Uxbridge Road junction from today until 13 October, for new drains and tree-root cutting. The SGN closure between The Mall and Simpsons Way has still not been given a new date.

Buses: the Hollyfield Road stop on Ewell Road (281, 406, 418, 662) is closed in both directions until 4pm on 26 October. TfL has the Ace of Spades works running until 24 October.

Old gadgets

The council has added drop-off points for small electricals. The nearest that takes both kinds is Save the World Club at 18 Southsea Road, which takes anything roughly shoebox-sized for recycling (kettles, hairdryers, chargers, cables, remotes) plus working laptops, tablets, phones and games consoles to give away. Tolworth Recreation Centre on Fullers Way North joins it this month. Surbiton Library, Tolworth Library on the Broadway and Maple Works on Maple Road take the working devices only. Every device is wiped, and working ones go to people in the borough who don't have one. None of them take TVs, microwaves, bulbs or batteries.

The week

Tonight: jazz jam at the Elm Tree, half seven, free. Quiz at the Waggon and Horses at 8, £2. Dry, about 22.

Tuesday: meet your local police officers at Surbiton Library, 2 to 3 (it runs on alternate Tuesdays, so check with the library first). Free indoor bowls at King George's Field, 6 to 7. Wednesday: Lamberts Road closes. The Coronation Hall's beer festival starts, 30 real ales, running to 18 October. Local author Tim Flower on his second novel at the cornerHOUSE, half seven, £5. Wet, heaviest from late morning to about 5 and heavy in places, easing in the evening, 17.

Thursday: Megan Leigh Mason and Richard Moore at the Lamb, half seven, free. The jam night at the Flyer is now weekly, from half eight, free. Quiz at the Berrylands, half seven. Dry, 15.

Weekend ahead: on Saturday the Ewell Road lights go up and Corinthian-Casuals are at home to Badshot Lea at 3. Reading trains call at Surbiton all weekend, and trains to Guildford via Cobham stop at Effingham Junction, with buses on from there. On Sunday, Ski Sunday is back on St Mark's Hill, 11 to 1: blocks of ice strapped to your feet, free, over-18s to ski and anyone to watch. Sign up on the day or at events@thecommunitybrain.org. Then the King's Soup in Claremont Gardens from 1.15: bring a potato or a leek and your own cup or bowl.

Back tomorrow.
