your town, every morning

Morning, Surbiton. A quick correction to start: I told you this week that The Lamb runs an Irish folk jam on the last Wednesday of the month. Kat wrote in to say that hasn't happened in years — more on the real schedule in What's On. Also today: a Manor Park rethink you can weigh in on tonight, and a 204-mile thank-you walk. Welcome too to John, our first reader from the river end on Portsmouth Road.

Manor Park's new games pitch is moving — have your say tonight

Kingston Council has agreed to shift the planned games pitch in Manor Park, New Malden, from its original spot, which would have blocked the sightline between the playground and the bowls club, to a new position directly behind the bowls clubhouse. That keeps the pitch away from the infant playground, opens up the view across the park, and buffers the bowls club during its national tournaments. Two public consultation sessions run this week: tonight, Thursday 16 July, 5.30–7.30pm, and Saturday 18 July, 10am–noon, both at Manor Park.

A 204-mile thank-you to the home that cared for his gran

Oliver Taylor, 21, is walking the Cotswold Way in both directions — 204 miles — to raise £1,500 for Royal Star & Garter's Surbiton Home. His grandmother, 96-year-old Doreen Shepherd, spent her final two months there before she died in April. As Oliver puts it: “we had our Nanny back — we weren't her carers anymore and we were able to enjoy our last few weeks together.” He started in February and hopes to finish by the end of summer.

Two Surbiton sisters swap rackets for a riverside 10K

Freya (13) and Evie Hennings (10), from Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club — Freya's a former England Squash Rising Star — are taking on the Steps for Change Children's Challenge on Sunday 20 September, a 5K/10K along the Thames from Kingston Bridge to Hampton Court and back, in aid of Able Child. They've pledged £200 each. Sign up in July with code SQUASH for a shot at a free summer squash camp.

🚧 Roads & routes

Small correction first: I said the Gladstone Road lights on Hook Road would be down by last night. They ran over — TfL now has them clearing by 5pm today.

  • A3 at Tolworth: no change — TfL's live system still says 29 July, and this morning's update says traffic is flowing well.
  • Hook Road at Bridge Road roundabout: still the western side closed, temporary lights round the eastern side, until 31 July.
  • Ewell Road at Dysart School: the crossing works are due out Monday 20 July.
  • Ewell Road: two short jobs next Thursday 23 July — evening lights by the War Memorial, daytime lights near Douglas Road for the bus shelter upgrade.
  • Bus 281: still on diversion until 29 July, missing Tolworth Station in both directions.

K1, K2, K3 and the 71: good service, no diversions posted today. Hit a closure that's not listed here? Reply and I'll dig.

What's on this week
  • Today, lunchtime: free jazz with Half-Diminished, Rose Café at Rose Theatre, 12–2pm. details
  • Today, evening: The Simon & Garfunkel Story, Rose Theatre, 7.30pm — or the Manor Park consultation above, 5.30–7.30pm. theatre tickets
  • Fri 17 July: Radio Gaga — a Queen tribute night, Rose Theatre, 7.30pm. Also Lifting Spirits wellbeing morning, 96 Ditton Road KT6, 10am. tickets

  • Sun 19 July: Community Brain walk — Richard Jefferies Footsteps, part two, from Tolworth Station. details
  • Correction — The Lamb: forget what I said about a monthly folk jam. Kat says the real minimum is live music every Thursday (7.30 for 8pm) and Sunday (4.30 for 5pm), and their Facebook page beats the website for what's actually on. Thanks for the steer, Kat.
Tomorrow, Fri 17 July

Sunny all day, high of 28°C, light winds and barely any rain — just a 10% chance in the evening. UV is still very high at 8, so keep covering up in the middle of the day. London's yellow heat-health alert lifts at 9pm tomorrow — the last stretch of it.

That's Thursday. If I've got something wrong — like The Lamb — tell me. This paper is only as good as your replies.
