your town, every morning

Morning. The pub quiz map, checked pub by pub rather than taken off my own back issues — which turned up two things I had printed wrong.

The Waggon & Horses quiz does not run on bank holidays. I said it was on this Monday. Two readers, one a weekly regular, say it never is.

The Black Lion starts at 8.45pm, not 8pm. I printed 8pm yesterday.

The Surbiton pub quiz map

Nine quizzes. Where the pub's own site confirms it, I have marked it confirmed. Where it does not, you get the phone number instead of a guess.

MONDAY — The Waggon & Horses, Surbiton Hill Road KT6 4TW. 8pm, £2 a head, fifty questions, £50 to the winners. Confirmed. Not on bank holidays.

TUESDAY — The Black Lion, 58 Brighton Road KT6 5PL. 8.45pm, cash prizes and a rolling jackpot. Book a table 24 hours ahead. The landlord asks the questions and has for ten years. Confirmed.

WEDNESDAY — The Victoria, 28 Victoria Road KT6 4JT. 7.30pm, £2.50 a head, bar tabs and wine. Confirmed. Tonight.

THURSDAY — The Berrylands, 107 Chiltern Drive KT5 8LS, 020 8399 4043. Thursdays confirmed, no time published — ring. Book a table, it gets packed. The K2 stops outside.

LAST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH — The Coronation Hall, St Mark's Hill. 8pm, get there for 7.30. £3 a head, teams of two to six, takings to Young Lives vs Cancer. Confirmed. Next: Thursday 24 September.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY — nothing. Not one quiz in Surbiton, Tolworth, Berrylands or Long Ditton on either night.

SUNDAY — four of them, at once.

The Antelope, 87 Maple Road KT6 4AW. 7.30pm, £50 bar tab to the winners, rollover jackpot, food until 10pm. Confirmed.

The Grove, Grove Road KT6 4BX, 020 8399 1662. A quiz exists; no day or time published anywhere. Ring first.

The Elm Tree, 64 Victoria Road KT6 4NQ, 020 8149 7059. Reader-reported at 7pm, £2.50. Nothing the pub publishes mentions a quiz. Unconfirmed.

The Prince of Wales, 117 Ewell Road KT6 6AL. Disputed — a reader sat it on a Sunday in July, the listings say Sunday or Wednesday. Ring first.

Settle the Grove, the Elm Tree or the Prince of Wales for me and it goes in corrected. And note the shape: four quizzes competing on a Sunday, three of them a ten-minute walk apart, and nothing at all on the two busiest nights of the week. If you run a pub, there is a gap with your name on it.

This week

Thursday is dry after all, and 26°C — leave the coats I told you to pack yesterday. Numbers from me two days out, only the shape beyond that, because Thursday has moved twice in two days.

Today grey and close, 20°C, nothing measurable in any model. Friday is the wet one, 22°C. Saturday dry, 21°C. Sunday 26°C and dry.

Roads and buses

The K3 is still diverted via Hare Lane, missing every stop from St Leonard's Road to Claygate Village Hall, until 8pm Friday. Everything else local is running a good service. The K4 is fine, whatever TfL's record says — it has carried expired diversion text for five days.

Coming: Claremont Road closed nightly 8pm to 5am, Monday to Thursday next week, Maple Road to Victoria Road. Then Victoria Road shut at the Brighton Road junction, around the clock, 14 to 21 September.

Karen

Checking the quizzes answered half of it: the Coronation Hall's monthly quiz raises for Young Lives vs Cancer, near-certainly the charity behind Karen's head shave too. Still no date and no fundraising page. If you drink in there, ask at the bar.

You lot

Friday's issue is new places to eat — what has opened, what has closed, and what is behind the paper on the windows. Two of you have asked for it now. If you know of one, tell me today.

Welcome to Martin, Robin, Yasmin, Shivani and Anna, who want roadworks warnings, local gossip, planning applications and simply to know what is on. All of that is the job.

Back tomorrow. The Vic tonight, half seven.
