Morning, Surbiton. In today's issue: pavement tables on Victoria Road, 184 new homes approved in one night, and a 2am queue for fried chicken. Two minutes.
Costa wants tables on Victoria Road. Last day to have your say is tomorrow
Costa at 27 Victoria Road has asked the council for pavement seating: three tables, six chairs and four barriers, out from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and shorter hours at weekends. Representations close tomorrow, Monday 13 July, on Kingston's licensing portal. Go Sip on Ewell Road has a similar application in, doubling its outdoor seating to four tables, out until 10pm daily. Comments on that one stay open until the 17th.

184 new homes approved in one committee night
Kingston's planning committee approved two big schemes on Wednesday. The empty Vauxhall dealership site gets a five-storey block of 34 flats with a ground-floor nursery: unanimous approval, 11 parking spaces, no affordable housing after consultants ruled it financially unviable. The committee also cleared the 1868 Regent Wing of Kingston Hospital, empty since 2021, for demolition. In its place: 150 rental flats in three six-storey blocks, again with no on-site affordable housing. The developer will pay the borough £2.3m instead. The Local Plan consultation from issue one runs until 4 September if you want a say in what gets built next.

Queuing for chicken at 1:50am
Popeyes opened on Clarence Street in Kingston on Friday. More than 100 people queued, the first from 1:50 in the morning, nine hours before the doors opened. The first three through the door won a year of free chicken sandwiches, and the branch brings more than 30 local jobs. Ten minutes on the train if fried chicken is your Sunday plan.
